Recap: Metcalf, Penny power Seahawks past Lions, 51-29

Rumor has it that Rashaad Penny will be late for his postgame press conference.

He's taking a detour, to run past the Lions' defense just one more time.

Penny gashed Detroit for 170 rushing yards and two touchdowns and DK Metcalf caught three touchdown passes as the Seattle Seahawks downed Detroit at Lumen Field, 51-29.

Seahawks extend lead twice with interception in between

Seattle takes over at the Detroit 40 after a failed onside kick.

Russell Wilson immediately hits a receiver for 15 yards, but the Seahawks ultimately settle for a field goal.

Jason Myers hits the field goal from 36 yards out.

Tim Boyle is intercepted earlier in the drive, and the ball is returned to the 22-yard-line of Detroit after a fumble on the return.

Lions score again, cut deficit to 45-29 in 4Q

The Lions take over at their own 25, trailing by, well, a lot. 23 to be exact.

A defensive holding penalty and two short passes get the Lions to first-and-10 at the Detroit 47.

The Lions work the ball to Seattle's 19 with catches from KhaDarel Hodge and Trinity Benson.

A 4-yard catch by Benson and 14-yard run by Tim Boyle puts the Lions first-and-goal at the 1.

Seahawks gain breathing room with Metcalf's third TD

The Seahawks take over at their own 25, looking to extend their lead after not having the ball for nearly a full 10 minutes.

Rashaad Penny helps move the chains. The Lions get it to third-and-7 on the next set of downs, but a 12-yard gain keeps the drive alive and puts Seattle at the Detroit 49, first-and-10.

DK Metcalf picks up another third down with a 17-yard reception to the Seattle 29, as Penny rips off another 9-yard gain to bring the third quarter to an end.

END 3RD: Seahawks 38, Lions 22

Penny moves the chains with a 1-yard run.

A false start makes it first-and-15 for Seattle, but Russell Wilson eventually gets Seattle to the 1-yard-line with a 17-yard run.

DK Metcalf pulls in his third touchdown of the game to put Seattle back up by three scores.

Lions recover onside kick after TD, cut deficit to 2 scores

The Lions go for the onside kick, and it's recovered by Godwin Igwebuike at the Detroit 44. 

The play has been challenged by Seattle to see whether the ball was first touched by a Lion or Seahawk.

The play stands. It's Lions' ball at their own 44.

Jamaal Williams leads the Lions into Seattle territory, as the Lions get down to fourth-and-2 at the Seattle 39. 

Boyle hits Amon-Ra St. Brown to save the drive with a 31-yard completion that puts the Lions first-and-goal at the 8.

Tim Boyle attempts a pass to offensive tackle Matt Nelson, who has the ball jarred loose as he tries to come up with a reception at the 2.

The Lions are backed up by a holding penalty, but a face mask on Seattle during a D'Andre Swift reception gives Detroit first-and-goal at the 6.

The Lions are hell-bent on scoring with an offensive tackle, as the next pass goes to Taylor Decker for a 6-yard touchdown that brings the Lions within two scores.

St. Brown scores second TD to cut Lions' deficit

The Lions take over at their own 27 after the interception and score.

The Lions advance with a holding penalty and 5-yard run by Jamaal Williams. Tim Boyle then hits Amon-Ra St. Brown for a 20-yard pickup to the Seattle 43.

Boyle's bomb for KhaDarel Hodge just two plays later is caught for a 42-yard gain to the 1-yard-line.

D'Andre Swift is blown up by Quandre Diggs and Jamaal Williams is stopped for no gain, as Matt Nelson is flagged for a false start before third down. But St. Brown scores for the Lions on third-and-goal from the 7, his second touchdown of the game.

The Lions go for the 2-point conversion, and St. Brown gets it.

Lions turn ball over, give up TD 48 seconds into 3Q

The Lions take over at their own 25 to start the second half. They currently trail 31-7.

Tim Boyle fumbles the snap, tries to get it out quickly, and the ball is popped up and intercepted by the Seahawks. Tough start.

Seahawks add another score before half as Lions miss FG

The Lions take over at their own 25, trailing by 17. All three of Tim Boyle's passes fall incomplete. Out comes Jack Fox to punt it away.

Seattle takes over at the 10.

Penny takes a couple carries for short-to-medium-sized gains, then breaks free on a 37-yard carry to the Detroit 41. He's absolutely rolling and making no apologies about it.

The Seahawks pick up another first down before the two-minute warning, then punch it in on a 1-yard pass to Tyler Lockett just a few plays later.

D'Andre Swift rushes for 30 yards to open the Lions' drive and they're able to get a 55-yard field goal try for Riley Patterson, but it comes up short.

Seahawks' offense keeps rolling, adds another score in 2Q

The Seahawks take over at their own 31, leading 17-7.

Russell Wilson hits DK Metcalf for 11 yards, then gets Tyler Lockett a few plays later for a gain of 28 to the Detroit 26.

The Lions only give up 7 yards on third-and-8, but Wilson sneaks it for 2 yards to move the chains.

Wilson then throws it over the top to Metcalf for an easy Seahawks touchdown.

Lions take advantage of short field as St. Brown gets on board

The Lions take over at Seattle's 45 after a 47-yard return by Godwin Igwebuike.

Amon-Ra St. Brown hauls in a 16-yard completion to the Seattle 26, and three plays later, takes the ball out of the backfield and rushes up the middle for a 26-yard rushing touchdown. Who saw that coming?

Detroit takes over at its own 25, trailing 10-0.

The Lions run the ball twice and get 2 yards, bringing the first quarter to a close. Third-and-8 when we return.

Boyle is strip-sacked on third down, leading to a Seattle recovery at the 27. The play is being reviewed to see if his arm was coming forward, and is eventually overturned.

The Seahawks complete a 58-yard pass on the first play of the drive, and Rashaad Penny scores his second touchdown of the game on Seattle's next play.

KhaDarel Hodge starts the drive with a 13-yard completion, but Tim Boyle's third-down pass to follow is off the mark and falls incomplete.

Seattle takes over at the 26.

Rashaad Penny rushes for 13, then a 9-yard pass, then Penny runs for 23 yards to the Detroit 29. The Lions have no answer for Seattle's run game.

The Lions force a screen pass for negative yardage, and that forces a bad pass from Wilson on third-and-15 to end the drive.

Jason Myers' 51-yard field goal try is good to put the Seahawks up 10.

Seahawks get run game going, gash Lions for 7-0 lead

Seattle takes over at its own 29 in a 0-0 game.

The Seahawks convert on a third-and-10 with a 12-yard completion to Gerald Everett, then get it to the 48 of Detroit, first-and-10, with a 4-yard completion on third-and-3. 

Will Harris is called for defensive holding, giving Seattle first-and-10 at the 43, where Rashaad Penny gashes the Lions' defense for 20 yards.

Two plays later, Penny scores on a run from the 15-yard-line to put Seattle up first.

Lions get quick stop, turn ball over on downs to start game

Seattle takes over at its own 22 to start the game.

The Lions defense quickly forces third-and-7 and brings the heat to force a wild throw from Russell Wilson down the sideline, where it falls incomplete.

Amon-Ra St. Brown fields the punt with a fair catch at the 30.

Lions 0, Seahawks 0 (13:52 1st) 

Tim Boyle and the Lions take over at the 30.

Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner is hurt on the first-down play, a 6-yard gain by Jamaal Williams. Tim Boyle converts on third-and-4 with a 12-yard throw to Amon-Ra St. Brown.

St. Brown gets 15 on the next play, stiff-arming Quandre Diggs as he's ridden out of bounds and chirping the former Lion after the run. This rookie is feeling it.

Williams is then stuffed short on third-and-2 at the Seahawks 29 during the next set of downs. Detroit goes for it on fourth-and-1, and Williams comes up about two inches short of the sticks.

Dan Campbell will challenge the spot, but the play is upheld.

Pregame

The Detroit Lions have split their last four games which, given they went winless if their first 11 games, probably qualifies as a roll.

They face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, the last opportunity for their first road victory of the season.

Winning in Seattle has been a tall task in the past but, like the Lions, the Seahawks have struggled this season at 5-10, including a 25-24 loss last week to the Chicago Bears at Lumen Field.

The Lions enter the game once again shorthanded: Tim Boyle will start at quarterback for Jared Goff (knee), and he'll be missing two of his top remaining receivers in Josh Reynolds and Kalif Raymond, both on COVID/reserve list. Linebackers Alex Anzalone and Josh Woods also recently suffering season-ending injuries, with the Lions turning to their practice squad for reinforcements.

The good news is running back D'Andre Swift appears poised to return, giving back the Lions their leader in yards from scrimmage after he missed four games with a shoulder injury.
