Michigan State falls to Duke, 85-76

Michigan State's season has ended with an 85-76 loss to Duke in a second-round NCAA Tournament game.

The Spartans, a No. 7 seed, finish the season 23-13.

After regaining the lead with 5:24 left and expanding it to as many as five points, the Blue Devils responded in the next three minutes and regained the lead with 2:05 left. They never looked back, going on a 13-2 run in the final 2:44.

Michigan State cut into the lead, 80-76, on a layup by Tyson Walker with 49 seconds left, but that was the closest the Spartans would come.

Gabe Brown had 18 points for the Spartans, Marcus Bingham added 16 and had three blocked shots, and Walker had 13 points.

Duke has regained the lead over MSU

Michigan State, which led by five points with just more than five minutes left, has called a timeout with 1:07 left to regroup and make a final push against Duke.

The Blue Devils took a 78-74 lead on a 3-pointer by Jeremy Roach with 1:16 left. 

Duke has made all five of its last five field goal attempts and after two free throws by Wendell Moore lead 80-74 with 59 seconds left.

Michigan State regains the lead

Michigan State has a slim 70-69 lead over Duke with 3:43 left and a Sweet 16 berth on the line.

A.J. Hoggard, playing with three fouls, hit two free throws with just more than six minutes left to tie the game, 65-65. Hoggard would get his fourth personal a few seconds later, with 5:43 remaining and went to the bench.

Michigan State regained the lead with 5:24 left on a 3-pointer by Tyson Walker. Marcus Bingham added two free throws to give MSU a 70-65 lead.

The Blue Devils, though, hit back-to-back baskets to pull within a point.

Michigan State closing in on Duke

A dunk by Michigan State's Gabe Brown dunk with 8:24 left has cut Duke's lead to two. The Blue Devils lead 63-61 with 8:24 left, but the Spartans are closing in.

Marcus Bingham made a 3-pointer, his second of the game, with 10:27 left to cut the Duke lead to four. Bingham has 14 points. 

Bingham got his third block of the game with 8:30 left and MSU got the defensive rebound setting up Brown's dunk. Brown has 18 points and is 7-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-5 from the 3-point line.

Duke still leads, but MSU hanging in

The Blue Devils had made 4 of their last 5 shots to build a 54-46 lead, but Michigan State went on a 6-3 run in the last two minutes. Duke leads 59-52 with just more than 11 minutes left, but the Spartans aren't going anywhere.

Tyson Walker made a layup with 13:05 left to start the run and finished it with a 3-pointer to pull MSU within 57-52. A.J. Hoggard is playing with three fouls for the Spartans.

Michigan State keeping it close with Duke

The Blue Devils opened the second half on a 5-0 run to take a nine-point lead, but the Spartans are keeping it close in large part because of Gabe Brown. Duke leads 48-42 at a timeout with 15:24 left in the game.

Michigan State cut Duke's lead to 46-42, on a dunk by Brown after a big defensive rebound by the Spartans. Brown has 16 points for MSU.

Duke is making 56% of its field goals, while MSU is 8-of-13 from 3-point.

Duke leads MSU at halftime, 39-35

Duke has a 39-35 lead over Michigan State at halftime. The Blue Devils, coming out of a timeout with 17 seconds left, built the four-point advantage with four seconds left on a dunk from Mark Williams, who leads Duke with 12 points.

Michigan State overcame a mid-half lull and has been scorching from the 3-point line hitting 7-of-10. Game Brown leads the Spartans with 14 points and is 4-of-4 on 3-pointers. MSU has made 7 of its last 8 field goals. 

Meanwhile, the Blue Devils are 14-of-27 from the field (54%).

"It's a heck of a basketball game," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said during a halftime interview on CBS.

Michigan State finding its touch on 3-pointers

It has become a 3-point fest between Michigan State and Duke, but the Blue Devils maintain a 31-27 lead with 2:43 left in the first half.

The Spartans, who hit a shooting lull, have found life again and made their last four field-goal attempts, including the last three on 3-pointers.

MSU's Jaden Akins started the 3-point flurry with five minutes left to pull Michigan State to 25-21. Duke answered with a 3-pointer, MSU's Gabe Brown hit from 3 (eight points, two 3-pointers), and after a Duke 3-pointer, Marcus Bingham answered with another 3.

Duke powers, Michigan State shooting slips

The Spartans led by as many as five early, but with 10:47 left in the first half, Paolo Banchero hit a pull-up jumper to give Duke a 17-16 lead. 

Then, MSU went cold, while the Blue Devils went on an 8-0 run over the last four minutes to build a 21-16 lead with just more than eight minutes left.

Michigan State hasn't scored the last 5:41 and after starting the game making 4-of-6, has seen its field goal percentage dip to 28.6%. Michigan State hasn't made a field goal its last 10 attempts and made one of the last 14.

Michigan State putting pressure on Duke

Michigan State, which has not trailed, continues to put pressure on the Blue Devils and lead 16-3 in this fast-paced game.

The Spartans are shooting 50% from the field. Gabe Brown has five points for MSU, and Marcus Bingham has four. 

Michigan State, which had two blocked shots in the first two minutes of the game, now have four, including two by Bingh

Spartans start strong, lead Duke

Michigan State started off the game shooting 4-of-5 from the field and led by as many as five points against Duke in the Round of 32. Michigan State leads 14-11.

At the first timeout with 15:10 left in the first half, the Spartans are hitting 66.7% of their attempts from the field. Marcus Bingham leads the Spartans with four points while Joey Hauser, the star of the first-round win over Davidson, had made his only attempt of the game on a 3-pointer.

Bingham and AJ Hoggard each have blocked shots for MSU.

It's Tom Izzo vs. Mike Krzyzewski, for the last time.

Michigan State takes on Duke on Sunday in a second-round game in the NCAA Tournament's West Region, with the winner advancing to the Sweet Sixteen.

This is Krzyzewski's last season at Duke — his 42nd leading the Blue Devils, and 47th overall. He's had plenty of success against Izzo, winning 12 of 15 meetings, though Michigan State has won two of the last three.
