The Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night made a big move to position themselves for the offseason, trading leading scorer Jerami Grant to the Portland Trail Blazers for a 2025 first-round draft pick and additional second-round picks, a league source confirmed to The Detroit News.

The Pistons also swapped second-round picks in Thursday's draft, getting the Blazers' pick (No. 36 overall) for the Pistons' pick (No. 46). The Pistons also will get back their 2025 second-round pick from the Blazers, which had been involved in a previous deal. Additionally, the Pistons will get a 2026 second-round pick, which will be the more favorable between the Blazers' and the New Orleans Pelicans'

The trade was first reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The first-round pick comes from the Milwaukee Bucks, and is top-four protected.

Grant had been signed with the Pistons through next season. He signed a three-year, $60 million deal with the Pistons as a free agent before the 2020-21 season, after one season in Denver, where he helped the Nuggets reach the Western Conference finals.

In his two seasons in Detroit, the 6-foot-8 forward averaged 20.9 points and 4.4 rebounds in 101 games — all as a starter. That included a breakout in his first season, where he set career high with 22.3 points, nearly nine better than his previous high.

Injuries limited Grant in both seasons with the Pistons, including a calf injury in late March that sidelined him for the rest of last season.

Grant, 28, who was drafted in the second round by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2014 out of Syracuse, also earned a spot on Team USA for the Tokyo Olympics, held in the summer of 2021, helping the team win gold.

Grant's name was bandied about during the NBA trade deadline last season, but the Pistons hung on to him after some reports suggested the Pistons were seeking two first-round draft picks for his services.

Grant had started to plant roots in Detroit, working on opening a homeless shelter on the city's west side.

In eight NBA seasons, Grant owns averages of 11.4 points and 3.9 rebounds, and is a 35% shooter from 3-point range. Portland will be Grant's fifth NBA team.
