Recap: MSU downs Western Michigan, 35-13, behind Payton Thorne's four TDs

Michigan State didn't play their best game. They had two turnovers and several key mistakes, but their talent bailed them out in the end against Western Michigan as they beat them, 35-13.

Don't let that final score fool you. Western Michigan played a good game. They stayed in it into the fourth quarter when they were down 21-13, dominating time of possession. They had the ball with the chance to tie, but went three-and-out. MSU's offense got its act together from there.

Payton Thorne threw four touchdown passes, but looked a little rusty all night. He was missing throws that he usually makes. He even made a poor decision on an interception.

MSU's defense had seven sacks on the night, including four from UNLV transfer Jacoby Windmon. Their secondary, though, was still pretty leaky. They still had trouble getting off the field on third down because of it.

MSU played sloppy, but Western Michigan played sloppier. They fumbled twice deep in MSU territory and had some untimely penalties. In the end, that was the difference.

Pregame

Michigan State kicks off Year 3 of the Mel Tucker era against Western Michigan in a season opener that isn’t short on story lines.

The matchup will pit father against son, with Spartans quarterback Payton Thorne facing Broncos first-year offensive coordinator Jeff Thorne. It will also pit a pair of players — MSU senior receiver Jayden Reed and WMU senior running back La’Darius Jefferson — against their former teams where they started their college careers.

Mel Tucker and the Spartans will host Western Michigan in Friday's season opener.

For the Spartans, the contest will provide the first look at an offensive unit that lost star running back Kenneth Walker III, who won the Walter Camp and Doak Walker awards last season. They will do so against a Broncos defense that’s no pushover and ranked in the top 20 in the nation in total defense (329.5 yards) and pass defense (186.4 yards) in 2021.

If recent history suggests anything, it’s that Western Michigan is more than capable of putting up a fight, with three of the past four meetings between the teams being decided by 14 points or fewer.
