Live updates: Michigan State falls in the Sweet 16 to Kansas State in OT

It was pretty surprising that MSU made it to the Sweet 16. It was even more surprising that it had the horses to keep up with a hot-shooting Kansas State team for 40 minutes. But at the end of the day, that's all it had in a 98-93 OT loss to end its season.

MSU got great performances from Joey Hauser, A.J. Hoggard, Tyson Walker, and Jaden Akins to keep up with K-State, but Markquis Nowell was the story. He had 20 points and an NCAA Tournament record 19 assists. MSU had no answer for him all night long.

MSU had a chance to tie on the last possesion, but couldn't get a shot off and ultimately had it solen away by —you guessed it—Nowell. It was a great game overall, but MSU just didn't have enough in the tank.

Final: Kansas State 98, Michigan State 93

Walker turned it over on the last possession. MSU's season is over.

-OT 0:17: Officials say Hoggard touched a ball that went out of bounds. Sure looked like he didn't. They confirm Hoggard did touch it.

-OT 0:43: MSU fell asleep on the baseline and it allowed KSU to get an ally-oop. KSU leads 94-92. MSU about to got to the free throw line, the question whether it'll be shooting two or three free thows.

-OT 1:29: Tied at 92. Which team will blink first?

-OT 2:26: Hauser is hurt. Ankle got tied up a bit. KSU leads 88-87. He's staying in for now. As I type this, Hoggard with a huge and-one. MSU up 90-88.

Overtime

-2H Walker makes a layup. We're headed to OT. 82 all.

-2H 0:20: It's gonna come down to one last shot. MSU ball, down 2. This is it.

-2H 0:52 And then Malik Hall with a massive and-one...but misses the free throw. Two-point game.

-2H 1:03: Akins hit a 3 to make it a two-point game, but Nowell continues to be a thorn in MSU's side. He knocks down a jumper to make 82-78.

Final media timeout

-2H 3:24: KSU still up by 4. Hauser missed a wide open 3 that would have made it a one-point game. Hoggard will be at the line out of the timeout.

-2H 4:34: Now MSU is making some huge mistakes. Hauser missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and then Akins travelled. Tyson Walker with a huge 3 to stop the bleeding. KSU up 77-73.

Under-8 timeout

-2H 5:54: They just keep going back and forth. KSU is holding on to a 72-70 lead. Joey Hauser has 18 points and Hoggard has 16 points for MSU.

Under-12 timeout

-2H 10:46: This game is getting fun. MSU leads 60-59. Jaden Akins and A.J. Hoggard are playing out of their minds.

-2H MSU is taking advantage of Nowell being on the bench. Nowell just came back in, but MSU went on an 11-2 run while he was on the bench. 55-52 MSU.

-2H Nowell is currently getting his ankle taped. Didn't look like he could put any weight on it.

Under-16 timeout

-2H 15:31: If it wasn't for a bunch of missed KSU free throws, MSU would be down by double digits at the moment. Instead, it's down by just four, 50-46. Nowell looked like he rolled his ankle pretty good on that last play. Will keep you updated.

Start of second half

Can MSU find a way to slow down Markquis Nowell? We're about to find out.

Halftime: KSU 43, MSU 38

MSU had a lot of trouble closing out on KSU 3's. Tom Izzo has been really upset with the defense lately. Looks like he'll have to let his team know in the locker room.

Final media timeout of first half

-1H 3:46: MSU had several chances to distance itself but couldn't do it. Kept turning the ball over. Now KSU is on a 10-2 run. It leads 30-26.

Under-8 timeout

-1H 7:49: MSU has its first lead at 19-18. It'll have the ball out of the timeout.

Second media timeout

-1H MSU shooting a little bit better and KSU has cooled off a bit. It has rebounded much better than they have this season, though. Tied at 17.

-1H 14:20: Joey Hauser showed up offensively for MSU. Six early points on a couple of 3's. The rest of the team? Not so much. KSU up 12-10 early

Pregame

Michigan State is back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2019 and takes on Kansas State at Madison Square Garden, which is a place that has not been kind to MSU in the past.

It lost in the 2014 Elite Eight to eventual national champion UConn, and lost earlier this season to Rutgers, among other losses at MSG. It'll look to overcome its demons and have a chance to play for its 10th Final Four under Tom Izzo.
