Big Ten basketball schedules for Michigan State, Michigan revealed

The Big Ten gauntlets for Michigan and Michigan State men’s basketball have been revealed.

The conference released its complete 20-game league schedule on Tuesday, which includes dates for the home-and-home series between the Spartans and Wolverines. The Big Ten previously announced its conference matchups in April.

The two rivals will square off in East Lansing on Tuesday, Jan. 30, and in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Feb. 17. Since Juwan Howard became Michigan’s head coach in 2019, the Spartans and Wolverines have split the past eight meetings, with each team winning at home.

Before that, both teams will open Big Ten play at home on Tuesday, Dec. 5, with Michigan hosting Indiana at Crisler Center and Michigan State taking on Wisconsin at the Breslin Center. The Wolverines and Spartans also will close out their respective conference slates on Sunday, March 10, with Michigan facing Nebraska at home and Michigan State making the trip to Indiana.

Among other notable matchups, Michigan will take on reigning Big Ten regular-season and conference champion Purdue, which returns all five starters and last year’s Wooden Award winner Zach Edey, twice — on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 23 and at home on Sunday, Feb. 25. Michigan State will face Purdue just once and travel to Mackey Arena on Saturday, March 2.

Another highlight is Michigan will play its lone regular-season matchup against Penn State on Sunday, Jan. 7 at one of the most storied venues in college basketball: The Palestra in Philadelphia. The neutral-site meeting will be a homecoming and reunion for assistant coach Phil Martelli, the former longtime head coach at Saint Joseph’s who is from the Philadelphia area and whose son Jimmy is an assistant on Mike Rhoades’ staff at Penn State.

Game times and TV designations for all games will be announced at a later date.
